Quick Summary

  • Call (833) 267-6094 to cancel - available 24/7
  • No early termination fee - Spectrum is month-to-month, no contracts
  • Return all equipment within 15 days or you’re paying $50-$300+ per device
  • Spectrum doesn’t prorate. Time your cancellation the day before your billing cycle resets, or you’re paying for a full month you won’t use
  • You can cancel TV and keep internet (or vice versa) - each service is independent

How to Cancel

Phone is your only real option. Spectrum doesn’t let you cancel online.

Call (833) 267-6094 and select “Service changes,” then “Remove service.” You’ll land in the retention department. This is the part where they try to keep you.

The fastest way through retention: tell them you’re moving out of Spectrum’s service area. They can’t offer you a deal if you’re leaving their footprint, so the call wraps up in minutes instead of 20.

Before you hang up, get a confirmation number and ask for email verification. Write both down.

Tip: Have your account number and billing cycle date ready before calling. If you’re not fully committed to canceling, call and ask about downgrades or seasonal holds first - Spectrum offers holds up to 90 days at (833) 224-6603.

In-Person

You can also cancel at a Spectrum store. Visit spectrum.com/stores for locations. Hours are typically Monday-Saturday 10 AM-8 PM, Sunday 12-5 PM. Bring a photo ID and your account info. You can return equipment at the same time.

Online

Not available. Phone or in-person only.

What It Costs

Nothing beyond your regular bill. Spectrum runs month-to-month with no contracts, so there’s no early termination fee.

The catch is billing. Spectrum stopped prorating in 2019. If you cancel mid-cycle, you pay for the entire month - no partial refund, no credit for unused days.

Important: Cancel at least one business day before your next billing cycle starts. If you miss it by a day, you owe the full monthly charge with zero refund for the unused portion.

Equipment Return

What You Return

  • Cable boxes (HD, DVR)
  • Modems and routers
  • Power cords and cables
  • Remote controls

If you own your own modem or router, you keep it. Only Spectrum-provided equipment needs to go back.

How to Return It

Spectrum store - walk in with your equipment and ID. You get a receipt on the spot. This is the safest option.

UPS Store - any UPS Store location (not drop boxes or access points). They package and ship it for free. You get a receipt with tracking.

FedEx - limited to specific devices (HD receivers, DVR receivers, WiFi gateways, modems). You have to package it yourself.

Deadline

15 days from cancellation. Some accounts get up to 30 days - check your confirmation email for your specific deadline.

Unreturned Equipment Fees

Equipment Fee
Cable Box (HD) $50-$150
DVR Box $150-$200
Modem $100-$150
Router/Gateway $100-$200
Important: Get a receipt. Equipment charge disputes are the most common Spectrum complaint. Photograph everything before you hand it over, note the serial numbers, and keep your receipt until the final bill comes clean.

After You Cancel

Final bill includes your monthly charge through the end of the billing cycle, plus any unreturned equipment fees or outstanding balances. No surprises if you returned everything and timed the cancellation right.

Confirmation arrives by email within 24-48 hours. If it doesn’t show up, call back.

Reactivation is available anytime without penalties, but you won’t get new-customer pricing unless you’ve been off Spectrum for 30-90 days (varies by market).

Common Problems

Problem Solution
Long hold times Call mid-morning or early afternoon; try (833) 949-0036 as an alternate number
Multiple transfers Say “Service changes” then “Remove service” to reach retention directly
Retention pressure Say you’re moving out of their service area - it’s the fastest exit
Equipment charges after return Call with your receipt immediately; escalate to supervisor if needed
Full-month charge after canceling You missed the billing cycle cutoff. Spectrum doesn’t prorate - nothing to do but learn from it
Missing equipment on their end Report immediately with serial numbers and photos; they may waive fees with documentation
