How to Cancel Your Comcast Xfinity Service

Are you moving, just unhappy with your service, and need to cancel your Comcast/Xfinity account? Maybe you just want to cancel certain aspects of your account. We put together this simple guide to explain how to cancel your service.

First of all, Comcast is the parent company for the TV service provider Xfinity. With Xfinity you can watch live and on demand movies, stream to different devices, and add multiple users.

However, if for whatever reason you no longer want your service or you simply want to change what television channels or additional services you have, Comcast makes it relatively simple. The company works very hard to give you alternatives to cancellation first and foremost, as almost all companies do.

If, for example, your bill is simply too high and you are looking for ways to change it, they can help you go over the different parts of your bill and alleviate services you don’t need.

If, instead, you are moving to an area where you cannot use their service, you make it very simple for you to cancel but depending on the language of your contract, you might have to pay a fee.

Comcast Cancellation policy

Comcast says you can cancel your Xfinity service at any time. However, if you have a contract, usually a contract for one or two years, premature cancellation does result in a fee.

Trying to change parts of your service to reduce your bill? Visit My Account. It is here that you can change aspects of your television service, upgrade your equipment or downgrade your equipment as necessary.

  • Moving to a new city? Comcast will help you to transfer the TV services to your new address. Reach out to xfinity.com/moving and submit all the information. They will help you gain access to Wi-Fi hotspots while you are on the move. If you have additional questions about what transpires during this process, look into their FAQs.
  • Want to change your plan? Reach out to Comcast and schedule a custom service call. They can help you during that call to make the changes you want. There are a few things however that you can do online using the links such as:
  • Need new equipment? Usually all it takes is an online chat or a phone call with a customer service representative from Comcast. However, if you have to return a piece of equipment as part of changes or cancellation to your account, start a return online or bring the equipment to a local Xfinity Store.
  • Going on vacation?  If you are heading out of town for work, family matters, or for pleasure and you will not be around for a few months, you can reach out to Comcast and have your Xfinity Television services put on hold. This is a good way to avoid the cancellation fee if you are only going to be gone temporarily.

How to Cancel Your TV Service

If, however, none of these situations apply to you and you just want to cancel your service entirely, there are several ways you can do it:

  • Contact Comcast directly. They will walk you through the process.
  • Chat with Comcast online and get step by step instructions.
  • Visit your local Xfinity Store where they can do it for you.
  • Complete a cancellation form and include your name, the address of your Xfinity services, your Comcast account, and phone number. Send the completed form to:
    • Comcast Cable
       ATTN: Service Change Requests
       1701 JFK Blvd.
       Philadelphia, PA 19103*
    • *If you send a cancellation request by mail or email, Comcast will reach out to you within 2 business days to confirm the cancellation.

Potential Issues with Cancellation

Customers who have tried to cancel their television service with Comcast / Xfinity tend to have the same potential issues and complaints. The majority of complaints have to do with the high cancellation fees that in many cases were unexpected, and problems when returning equipment during the cancellation process.

When you take out a telecommunications service, like your television service from Xfinity, they send you equipment (like a modem) which you pay to rent each month of your contract. When your contract is up or you’re canceling your service you are responsible for returning that equipment. If you don’t, you get charged the full cost of that equipment. There have been many situations where customers have complained that they did return the equipment as required but Comcast claims they never received it and as such, customers who tried to cancel face a very high fee on their final bill. (This typically applies to both cable tv and internet service.)

The best way to avoid these potential issues with cancellation is to use a shipping service that allows you to track the whereabouts of the equipment and to ensure you return all equipment in a timely fashion. Comcast customer service should be updated with the tracking numbers and you should make sure that the service you use requires a signature so that you can verify when it was received.

Cancellation Fees

Cancelling your Comcast/ Xfinity service can come with a fee, as mentioned. Comcast early termination fee (or “etf”) policy is $10 per month for every month that remains on your contract.

So, if you had a two year contract for your services and you cancel at the one-year mark because the prices increase after one year, Comcast will charge you $10 for each of the 12 months that remain on your contract. This means a total of $120.

This amount is the same no matter the type of service you have so you can easily look at the remaining months on your contract and figure out what you will be charged.
